The adventure begins!

Hello everyone !
I’m Irene. The short version to get to know me is that I’m a 10th level wizard that couldn’t stand still to save my life.
The long version of this story is a bit more complicated. I’m an artist, and apparently now I’m an artisan too!My journey began just when I was a little kid who drew everything she heard about and created maps of imaginary worlds. I grew up loving nature and history and at some point that turned also into loving drawing monsters and the characters of my own stories.

In 2015 I started college and joined the Fine Arts at Universidad Complutense in Madrid. There I started playing video games and Dungeons and Dragons, and discovered that concept artist was actually a profession and you could get paid to build imaginare words. The 8 year old Irene in my head was thrilled, I had found out what I wanted to do after college.I also learned a lot of amazing disciplines that I thought I would never use in my future like sculpture, engraving techniques and resin casting (jokes on you Irene). So after graduating I studied a master’s degree at Lightbox Academy on Concept art and Illustration while I started joining my first video game projects. In 2021 after a couple of years working on indie projects and working with small brands like Dungeon in a Box and Stirling Games, I moved to Asturias to work with Virtway Events as a full time concept artist. Here I fell in love with the place and its people. And after my contract was over I decided to stay here as a freelancer. While at it I started drawing again my own imaginary worlds, finding new styles and playing DnD with my new friends. And I started crafting… o boy, I started crafting everything. I made my own gear for TTRPGs and even started casting resin dice. At first everything was a hobby, but soon I realized that people liked it and it was a way to join my passions and live from my personal work.

And here we are! I’m currently still based in Asturias, in Gijón with my minion, ejem …sorry amazing partner Saúl. Together we are developing Irene’s Grimoire, a brand made for creative adventurers and dungeon dwellers, because..well we are of those too! We are building a community of people who share our passions and creative impulses and love every moment of the journey.

We have a long distance ahead but we are living this adventure with excitement. What about you ? Do you want to join our party?

✦ Keep your players engaged ✦

As you know, I love crafting stuff. Mainly DM Screens and dice. But that’s not the only thing.I also love crafting Stories!Seeing the faces on every plot-twist, with every new creature or relatable character… I relish the thought. That’s why I got so happy when I saw that one of our players was willing to travel 300km to join the table every month. We offered online play, but it just wouldn’t do. She wanted the real stuff. This is not a master plan, but rather a series of principles I follow that keep people entertained. You can follow them as a DM, but also as a player!

Unchain your character’s potential

Have you ever seen Django: Unchained by Quentin Tarantino? Even if you haven’t you probably know the scene:Leonardo DiCaprio's character is enraged. He accidentally breaks a glass and starts bleeding. The cameras do not stop. Instead, he follows with one of the most memorable improvisations in cinema’s History.I advise you not to get injured while playing TTRPGs. Please. However, I do advise you to embrace the chaotic nature of improvisational play and let your players get carried away. Be flexible, play to find out what will happen and you will all have fun.Even as a player, take your chances to get the spotlight and pass it back to whoever may want it or even need it. If Tarantino had stopped rolling, that scene would not exist.

Fun over style

Of course, at our table we have a beautiful DM screen made by myself. Also beautiful dice. But we also have some tacky stuff that makes us laugh and you wouldn’t expect.Yes, I’m talking about the My Little Pony minis.Long story short: We needed some minis for combat and we had none. Went to the store, grabbed the first thing we saw and had a laugh. Were they a bit anti-climatic? Actually not!The fact that we invested time and effort, as little as it was, in acquiring and customizing these, made the combat even more tense. We didn’t want our minis to die!Have a visual way to be part of the story, part of the table. Work together to make it feel like home, a familiar place to go on the weekends and enjoy around.

Silly reminders are the best reminders

Our initiative trackers are full of memes. It could be Strahd Von Zarovich on the one side, but on the other… Twilight’s Aro Volutri is ready to bite you.Yes, this has something to do with the “Fun over style” principle. But we also do this because it is useful. It helps the DM and players remember the personality of their characters. Even if it's a silly joke, it keeps you focused on how your character is supposed to act and their flaws.Get your character and try to convey its personality in a few memes. Do you really know them?

Silly reminders are the best reminders

We all love Critical Role, I’ve seen Vox Machina more times that I can count and stayed up at night watching the Mighty Nein stories. But when I’m playing I’m no Matt Mercer, and I don’t want to.Critical Role is a show, a really good one, but they are professional voice actors and storytellers. That’s their job, so they can put a lot of thought and effort into it.Your table is probably (as ours) not full of professional voice actors who can devote their lives to it. And that 's great! You can focus on having fun, which is the important part.Create a safe space in which players know they can pursue the funniest part of the game for them without being judged.
We are sometimes afraid of sounding stupid or making a bad impression but we forget that we are amongst friends and no one is recording. Your players will value more having a great time with you than you making endless voices and describing places as Tolkien would. Chill, have fun, no matter what, you are doing great!
So there you have it. These principles have hepled us stick together. If you use them, things like a player travelling 300km just to play, will start to happen organically.Bountiful Quests and successful rolls!
